Commenting on ideas and replying

Open an idea, type in the Write a comment… box at the bottom and press Enter. You can reply to other comments, and edit or delete your own. Comments are the easiest way to build on someone’s idea or ask a question about it.

Who can do this: members who can see the idea. Guests and people visiting through a share link can’t comment.

Write a comment

  1. Open the idea.
  2. Scroll to the comments at the bottom.
  3. Type in the Write a comment… box.
  4. Press Enter, or click the paper plane button, to post it.

Tips:

  • Press Shift+Enter to start a new line without posting.
  • Comments can be up to 2,000 characters.
  • Links you paste become clickable and open in a new tab.
  • Comments are plain text. There is no formatting, no @mentions and no attachments.
  • If your hive’s Admins have turned on the language filter, Hives’ AI filters out inappropriate language in comments and ideas.

The newest conversations are at the top.

Reply to a comment

  1. Click Reply under the comment.
  2. Type your reply. The comment you are answering is shown above the box.
  3. Click Reply to post it.

Replies are listed under the first comment of the conversation, oldest first. To show them, click the replies link, for example 2 replies. If you reply to a reply, your reply joins the same conversation.

Edit or delete your comment

  1. Click ⋯ next to your comment.
  2. Choose:
    • Edit to change the text in the Edit comment window, then save.
    • Delete to remove it, then confirm.

Only you can change the text of your comment. Collection managers and Admins can delete any comment, but they can’t edit what you wrote.

When you delete a comment that has replies, it stays in place as This comment was deleted so the replies still make sense. A comment without replies disappears completely.

Who can read your comment

Your comment can be read by everyone who can see the idea. If the idea is hidden from ordinary members, only the people who can see the idea can read your comment.

Collection managers and Admins can post comments that only some people can read, for example only the idea’s authors or only the collection managers. They can also change who can see an existing comment. You always see your own comments, whatever their setting. See Choosing who sees a comment, and moderating comments.

On a collection that hides contributor names, comments from the person who submitted the idea show as Submitter to everyone else.

Notifications about comments

You get a notification, and an email, when:

  • someone comments on an idea you submitted, contributed to or are assigned to
  • someone replies to your comment

You are never notified about your own comments. Several comments from the same person on the same idea are grouped into one notification. Click it to jump straight to the comment. See Notifications and emails from Hives.

Common questions

Why did I get “Failed to create comment”? Your comment was not posted. Try again in a moment. Guests can’t comment, so the comment box isn’t shown to them.
