Adding files to an idea
You add files to an idea through a file upload question on the form, such as the Attachment question most collections have. You can add up to 10 files per question, each up to 1 GB, of any file type. After submitting, you can add, replace or remove files directly on the idea.
Who can do this: the person who submitted the idea and its contributors, as well as collection managers and Admins.
Add files when you submit
- Open the collection and click Contribute.
- Find the file question. By default it is called Attachment, but the collection managers may have renamed it.
- Drag files onto the box that says Drop files here or click to upload, or click the box to choose files.
- Add more files if you need to. You can add up to 10 files to each file question.
- Submit your idea.
Your files upload after your idea is saved. If a file fails to upload, you see Your contribution was saved, but some files failed to upload. Your idea is safe. Open it to check which files arrived, and see below for how to change them.
The first image you upload becomes the cover picture on your idea’s card. If you don’t upload an image and your hive’s Admins have added default images, Hives picks one of those at random as the cover.
If the form has no file question, the collection does not take files. Ask a collection manager if you need to share a document.
Add, replace or remove files later
Files sit under their question on the idea, not in the edit window.
- Open your idea.
- Find the file question. If it is empty, it says No files attached.
- Use the buttons under the question:
- Add file to add a file when the question is empty
- Replace file to swap all the files on the question for one new file
- Remove file to take all the files off the question
On the idea itself a file question takes one file. Replacing removes every file that was there before, so if you want several files on one question, add them all when you submit.
If you see Could not change the file, the change did not go through. Try again in a moment.
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Files per file question | Up to 10 |
| Size per file | Up to 1 GB |
| File types | Any |
Who can see your files
Files are shown to the same people who can read that question’s answers. On the default Attachment question, that is everyone who can see the idea. Collection managers can change this for each question.
Common questions
Can I add files when I submit through a share link? No. File questions are not shown on the share-link form. If you are a member, open the collection inside Hives instead, or add files to your idea after submitting. See Submitting an idea through a share link.
Can I add a file to a comment? No. Comments are text only. You can paste a link to a file instead.
