Setting up sign-in with Microsoft

If your organisation uses Microsoft 365, Teams or Outlook, people can sign in to Hives with their usual Microsoft work account. Turn on Sign in with Microsoft in your hive settings, and a Microsoft button appears on your hive’s sign-in page.

Who can do this: Admins.

Turn on sign-in with Microsoft

  1. Open Menu > Admin > Hive.
  2. Stay on the Access tab.
  3. In the Login card, under Options, turn on Sign in with Microsoft.
  4. Click Save in the Unsaved changes bar at the bottom.

Your hive’s sign-in page now shows a Microsoft button. Turning this on doesn’t change who can join. That is still decided by Who can join. See Choosing who can join your hive.

How Hives recognises people

The first time someone signs in with Microsoft, Hives matches them by their Microsoft sign-in name (the address they type to sign in to Microsoft, such as anna.berg@yourcompany.com). After that, Hives remembers their Microsoft account.

This matters when people use more than one sign-in method:

  • If their Microsoft sign-in name is the same as their email address, they get the same Hives account whether they use Microsoft or an email code.
  • If their sign-in name is different (for example a.berg@yourcompany.onmicrosoft.com), signing in with Microsoft gives them a separate Hives account. Their earlier ideas and memberships stay with the other account.

If your hive uses Allowed email domains only, Hives checks the domain of the Microsoft sign-in name. Make sure that domain is on your list.

When a Microsoft sign-in creates a new Hives account, Hives copies the person’s name and profile photo from Microsoft. Later sign-ins don’t overwrite changes they make in Hives.

Accounts that are refused

  • Microsoft guest accounts. People who are guests in your Microsoft organisation (for example, external partners added to your Teams) can’t sign in with Microsoft. They see “You don’t have access to this hive”. They can use another sign-in method instead, if your hive offers one and they meet your join rule.
  • People who don’t meet your join rule. A Microsoft account doesn’t get anyone past Who can join.

If your Microsoft admin blocks new apps

Some organisations don’t let employees approve new apps themselves. If people see a Microsoft message asking for admin approval when they sign in, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to grant consent for the Hives app for your organisation. Hives asks Microsoft only for people’s basic profile: name, email address, sign-in name and profile photo.

Common questions

Someone gets “This sign-in method is not enabled for this hive”. Why?

Sign in with Microsoft is turned off. Turn it on and click Save.

Can people still use an email code?

Yes, if Email code is also turned on. You can offer any mix of Microsoft, Google and email code. See Hive settings: access, sign-in and the login page.
