How to edit the Home page
The Home page is the first thing people see when they open your hive. Admins can change its cover image, welcome text, the way pages are shown and the order of those pages, then publish the changes for everyone.
Who can do this: Admins. Managers can post announcements and create pages, but they can’t change the Home page itself.
What people see on Home
Everyone who opens Home sees, from top to bottom:
- a greeting with their first name,
- the cover image next to the welcome text,
- an Announcements section with up to 3 announcement cards, newest first (and See all when there are more),
- the hive’s pages, shown in the layout you choose.
A page is a section of your hive that groups collections and surveys for a team, site or initiative. Read more in Pages: how to create, publish and choose who sees them.
Open Edit mode
Editing the Home page works on a computer, not on a phone or tablet.
- Go to Home.
- In the top bar, switch from View to Edit.
You now see the editing screen with three parts: the welcome section, Manage announcements and Manage pages.
Change the cover and welcome text
- In the welcome section, click the cover area to upload an image or video. A 16:9 image works best, such as 1280 x 720 px.
- To remove the cover, click the x on it.
- Write your welcome message in the text editor on the right. You can use headings, bold, lists and links.
- Click Publish in the bar at the bottom.
Use the welcome text to tell people what the hive is for and what you would like them to do.
Choose the page layout
Under Manage pages, the Layout menu decides how pages are shown on Home:
| Layout | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Section view (default) | Each page is a section with its title, the start of its text and its collections and surveys as cards. |
| Gallery view | A Pages heading with a grid of page cards (cover, title, a short excerpt and how many collections and surveys each page holds). |
Pick a layout, then click Publish.
Change the order of pages
- Under Manage pages, click Reorder.
- In Reorder pages, drag the pages into the order you want.
- Click Publish.
New pages are always added at the top of the list, so check the order after creating a page.
Add announcements and pages
The Manage announcements and Manage pages sections have buttons to create content straight from Home:
- + Announcement opens Add announcement. See Posting announcements and pop-ups.
- Set popup chooses an announcement to show as a pop-up on Home.
- + Page opens Add page.
In Edit mode you also see unpublished pages, marked Unpublished. Members don’t see them until the page is published.
Good to know: New announcements and pages are saved as soon as you click Save in their dialog. You don’t need to click Publish for them. A new announcement is visible to members straight away. A new page starts unpublished.
Publish your changes
As soon as you change something, a bar appears at the bottom with Unsaved changes and Publish.
- Click Publish to save the cover, welcome text, layout, page order and pop-up choice.
- Switch back to View to see Home the way members see it.
If you try to leave with unpublished changes, Hives asks: “You have unpublished changes. Are you sure you want to leave?”
Common questions
Can I change the logo, brand colour or hive name here? No. These are set by Hives. Contact us at help@hives.co. See Logo, colours, hive name and AI features.
Can Managers edit the Home page? No. Home page changes are an Admin task. Managers can still post announcements and create pages from the + button.
Can I show different Home pages to different groups? Everyone sees the same Home page. You control who sees each page on it with the page’s Visible to setting.
